What has been the general nature of your practice?
For thirty years I have been fighting to solve people’s problems and correct injustices whether it be the wrongfully accused, person victimized by negligence, overbearing landlord and protecting those who face discrimination. In all cases I represent people with real problems who need an advocate to solve these problems. I am incredibly proud of my pro bono work and work as a juvenile hearing officer.
Why do you consider yourself qualified to be judge?
I have been a practicing attorney taking on both criminal and civil cases for over 30 years. I serve as a truancy master in family court, teaching kids about the importance of attending school, and also serve as a hearing officer for the PA Supreme Court Disciplinary Board protecting the integrity of the legal profession.
What is it about our criminal justice system that inspires you?
Reuniting families and helping keep children out of the school to prison pipeline.
What about our current criminal justice system do you believe needs to be reformed?
All of it. We focus on retribution instead of rehabilitation. The entire system should be reevaluated from the bottom up so that we have lower recidivism rates. Far too many people fall into the trap of being permanently on probation like Meek Mill. We need to use probation as an opportunity for intervention to make sure people have successful lives, not a lifetime of punishment.
As a judge, what would your sentencing philosophy be?
Making the victim whole and making sure the defendant has the tools necessary to be successful and not commit any additional crimes.
Have you ever woken up in the middle of the night thinking about a case and wishing you had handled something differently? If so, please describe one situation.
I have lost many night sleep worrying about my clients and meeting deadlines despite the fact that I have had insurance coverage protecting me. I've stayed awake at night trying to craft arguements on behalf of my clients to get through to judges and juries becauae I care about the people I have represented. Also, having appeared before certain judges you get to know how they think and I've tossed and turned some nights trying to craft arguements to break through that particular jurists preconceived notions.
Who are your role models and why?
Judge Ronald Merriweather, Judge Myrna Field, Judge Lydia Kirkland - These judges were Tributes to their profession and the Bench. Regardless of the case all parties, witnesses and lawyers were treated with respect. No case was ever pre-judges and fairness, the law and evidence was there hallmark.
What is your favorite book, movie, or tv show of all time and why did it speak to you so much?
"Team of Rivals" (Book) - True story about President Lincoln who took office in the midst of a Civil War, the Country torn apart and with a cabinent who's ultimate goal was to destory him. Yet, against all odds and because he stuck to the principals he beleived were right and decent, accomplished a great thing by ending slavery leading even his rivals to love him in the end. This book is a true story and example encouraging those in leadership positions to be guided by what is right and in your heart and good things will come of it.
"Rudy" (Movie) - Appeals to me because its a story of a person who was told time and time again he couldn't do the things he ultimately accomplished. His desire and refusal to quit, though at times coming close, lead him to accomplish his dreams. Keep on trying, keep the faith even when everyone says you will fail, and your dreams just might come true.
Name a song that you were obsessed with as a teenager.
"Shining Star" - Earth, Wind & Fire
What is you favorite number?
22, my daughter’s birthday.
