What has been the general nature of your practice?
Civil trial practice -Insurance Defense
Why do you consider yourself qualified to be judge?
With nearly 20 years in the courtroom as a trial lawyer, first as an Assistant District Attorney in Philadelphia, and now as a civil defense lawyer, I have the experience, tenacity and fairness to sit as a Judge in the Court of Common Pleas. I am well-versed in the nuances and fast paced nature of trial rooms in Philadelphia. I have the intellect, temperament and compassion for people to effectively resolve the cases before me. In addition, as a native Philadelphian, I truly understand the essence of the people, places and issues found in most of the matters that are brought before the Court of Common Pleas.
What is it about our criminal justice system that inspires you?
As an Assistant District Attorney in Philadelphia for over 12 years, I understood the magnitude of my responsibility of being an advocate for victims of crime. In the same vein, I was also keenly aware that justice is not served if the rights of the individuals I prosecuted were not fully protected under the law. That said, I am inspired by the criminal justice system's ability to provide justice to those who are victimized, bring to bear punishment to those who are law breakers while ensuring that the rights of both victim and criminal are protected.
What about our current criminal justice system do you believe needs to be reformed?
I believe that the rise in private prisons and the related industries they support can erode public trust in the criminal justice system. The improprieties of a few as it relates to funneling inmates into for profit prisons simply diminishes publish faith in the system and serves as a temptation to those who are weak in character to profit from the prison system.
As a judge, what would your sentencing philosophy be?
It is my philosophy that the punishment should fit the crime. I will never hesitate to use the law, along with my discretion and real-life experience to fashion sentences that I believe are fair and just.
Have you ever woken up in the middle of the night thinking about a case and wishing you had handled something differently? If so, please describe one situation.
I cannot recall having encountered this situation; however, I always do a personal post-mortem on my trials and arbitrations to see if there was anything I could have done better. I am always trying to hone my skills and abilities.
Who are your role models and why?
I admire my parents. Both are hard-working people who taught me to respect others, give an honest day's work for an honest day's pay and the importance of integrity. They demanded that I develop a strong awareness of the world around me, and taught me to treat everyone like I wanted to be treated.
What is your favorite book, movie, or tv show of all time and why did it speak to you so much?
I am an avid reader, and often read the same books more than once. One of my favorite books is "Standing at the Scratch Line". It is about an African-American family from Louisiana, and it follows the main character from the early 1900's through the 1950's. The main character's strong sense of justice and deep commitment to family are what resonated with me.
Name a song that you were obsessed with as a teenager.
I can't say I was obsessed with any song in particular as a teenager, but I did have my favorite artists. Among them were Prince, Earth, Wind & Fire and The Police.
