What has been the general nature of your practice?
Mostly criminal defense.
Why do you consider yourself qualified to be judge?
15 years of extensive court room experience.
What is it about our criminal justice system that inspires you?
It protects everyday citizens. However, it is not perfect. It needs qualified Judges to do a very important job.
What about our current criminal justice system do you believe needs to be reformed?
Too many judges simply buy votes without having the experience to make proper rulings and verdicts. There should never be even one person wrongfully incarcerated simply because a Judge lacked court room experience and made a mistake -- not even once.
As a judge, what would your sentencing philosophy be?
Punish those who choose to be predators and try to rehabilitate those who made one criminal mistake. Do not simply throw someone in a cell and let them go X amount of years later to commit the same crime upon innocent people.
Have you ever woken up in the middle of the night thinking about a case and wishing you had handled something differently? If so, please describe one situation.
Absolutely. Very often. A criminal case is like a road with many forks, which leads to more roads with more forks. A recent client made a bad mistake and was offered a short period of probation. She declined the offer over my strenuous pleading and later received several years in jail when the Judge was rightfully angered by her actions. While there was nothing I personally did that I regret, the situation still bothers me. It's a life that was needlessly interrupted for several years.
Who are your role models and why?
Judges who do their job properly and effectively. They are who I want to be.
What is your favorite book, movie, or tv show of all time and why did it speak to you so much?
I like A Few Good Men. It was about criminal clients who weren't as bad as they were accused of being, yet still made a mistake. They were absolved of the harsh penalty they faced but still punished slightly for their misdeeds. The justice system worked perfectly.
Name a song that you were obsessed with as a teenager.
